Commitment to corporate responsibility
SIGNING OF THE ENVIRONMENT CHARTER

The Hungarian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie Franco-Hongroise) organised a conference on environment conscious company behaviour, on the 28th of October. At the conference 70 member companies joined the Charter by signing it.
Currently, over 350 French companies are present in Hungary, employing 57.000 people, with a total annual turnover close to EUR 9 billion. Many of these French companies have been present in Hungary since the early 1990s and are significant players in every field of the Hungarian economy. 2008 was an outstandingly fruitful year with respect to French investment in Hungary.

The member companies of the Chamber wish to promote these attitudes to the environment by prioritising environmentally sensitive solutions, limiting use of natural resources and saving energy through an environmentally focused attitude to investments, careful selection of business partners and production equipment, being conscious of environmentally friendly waste management and by encouraging their employees and business associates to pursue an environmentally friendly way of life.

70 member companies of the Chamber joined the initiative by singing the Charter. The approval and the singing of the Charter was the first step in a long process that aims to call attention to the importance of corporate social responsibility in environment consciousness, which may become a model to be followed by other companies.

HEALTH AS AN ECONOMIC VALUE

CONFERENCE HELD ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIGNING OF THE HEALTH CHARTA

The Hungarian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie Franco-Hongroise) organised a conference on health conscious company behaviour for the 24th of September. The event took place on the first anniversary of the signing of the Chamber’s Health Charta. At the conference, the members of the Charta evaluated the programmes launched so far, and made summed up the achievements of the past 12 months.

The members of the French-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed the Health Charta on the 25th of September, 2008. The aim of the Charta is to call attention to the significance of health as an economic value and to the responsibility of the players of the economy in this area, and also to show up good examples of the protection of employees’ health (health awareness programmes, screenings, healthy food, sports).

45 member companies of the Chamber joined the initiative last year by signing the Charta. These members of the Chamber declared that the approval and the singing of the Charta was the first step in a long process that aims to call attention to the importance of corporate social responsibility in health protection. In accordance with their company values, the member companies that signed the Charta decided to demonstrate their commitment to corporate responsibility in general, and to the improvement of the quality of their employees’ lives as well as to the development of the society.

The Health Charta is of a special importance in a country where health protection statistics are very unfavourable compared to other European countries. In this spirit, the members of the Hungarian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry join the Charta to undertake a role in this mission that serves the good of the public, and they set it as a model to be followed by other companies.

The success of the initiative has led the Chamber to assess the programmes on an annual basis, and will publish their achievements. To that end, a conference was held on the 24th of September, the first anniversary of the signing of the Charta. At the event, another 30 members of the Chamber joined the Charta, which means that it has been signed by nearly 80 members so far. This contributes to the improvement of the health status of some 25,000 employees.

The conference, held at the headquarters of Sanofi-Aventis, was also attended by such honourable guests as Health Minister Tamás Székely, Mr. René Roudaut, the Ambassador of the French Republic to Hungary, and Imre Gara Imre, the vice-president of the National Health Council.
